“Against the Wind, we were runnin’ against the wind…” – Sage Canaday (April 20, 2015)

“Against the wind/ We were runnin’ against the wind/ We were young and strong, we were runnin’/ Against the wind…” -Bob Seger My heart sank when I saw the weather forecast. It’s silly of course because the weather is something we cannot control (although the report did make me pack my warm Hoka hat, which in retrospect I’m very glad I did!), and to worry about it only made me unnecessarily cranky. Anything but a headwind! I cringed at the thought of a cold and wet breeze hampering my pace. Thinking back to my short lived days as an aspiring mechanical/aerospace...

371 Days to the Finish Line – Michelle Mahoney (April 21, 2014)

It all started with a phone call: “Would you be interested in running a race with me? We will have a team of 12 and we will be running across Massachusetts (206 miles) in 48 hours.” Sure, why not, that sounds like fun and it was raising money for a great cause. The training began, and I realized I had a hard time even running a mile. Over the course of the next several months I began to love running. After that first race was over, I started running 5k’s and 10k’s. I then decided it was time to take on a half marathon. I trained for months and after finishing two of them, I wanted to...

Lisa Roehm–Gensel – [Excerpt] “Those miserable Newton hills! Someone who qualified and trained hard for Boston shouldn’t be running such slow times…” (April 15, 2013)

At the half way point, I was right on pace for my goal. But as the miles ticked by, they became more and more difficult. After Mile 16, everything fell apart. My legs would not move. I walked more often and getting down anywhere near a nine minute mile was impossible. Even the downhills were painfully slow. The only thing that made it half way bearable was the crowds. They were unbelievable. During those hills, I grabbed oranges from families on their lawns. It was getting warmer and some people were offering ice, which was a nice treat. These miles are where my body failed me and my mind did...

I will not let cowards prevail over what turned out to be my most complete marathon yet. – Ty Godwin (April 15, 2013)

At the onset of my running career (wouldn’t that be great if it was a career?) at the age of 40, I had never run before in my life. There was no cross-country or track team for me growing up. In fact, I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis in Junior High and would come in “dead last” in P.E. class when we would have to run around the baseball field. Going through some major life changes at the age of 40, I took up running, mainly running for health reasons, doing an occasional 5k. I didn’t attempt a marathon until after my wife bought me Hal Higdon’s book, and I decided to race...
