It took me a long time to complete this story. Partly because of finding the time to write it. Partly because I wasn’t ready to let it go, and putting it down “on paper” seemed to make it final. My first time in Boston! What a beautiful city! Steve and I drove from Ottawa, and daughter Katie took the train from NYC to cheer me on. [Writing this, I’m starting to get emotional already. Sheesh.] Steve and I made our way to the expo and start to soak it in. Oh. My. God. I can’t believe I was at race kit pick up for THE BOSTON MARATHON. It didn’t feel real! I looked around and saw all...

Beauty from ashes. That is what I witnessed in Boston – DeDe Gibbs (April 21, 2014)

That’s the first thought that comes to my mind when I reflect on the past weekend. Just. Wow. I ran the Boston Marathon yesterday. My seventh marathon – my second Boston. And yet it felt like a new experience – like nothing else I’ve ever done. I can still hear the cheers. See the faces. Passionate. Determined. United. Urging us on toward the goal. Overwhelming. Compelling. Powerful cheers. Wow. I came to this laptop tonight to write my usual post-race report. I’m finding it hard to write about this one. I mean, typically, I would write what I had for...

WE ARE BOSTON STRONG and the whole world knows it! – Kelly LeCours (April 21, 2014)

I am 49 years old, married to a marathoner and have two beautiful girls. 2014 was my 13th Boston Marathon. Last year in Boston I had a great race finishing in my fastest Boston time – 3:17:10. When I finished, I grabbed my clothes and went to Exhale Spa for a wonderful shower. This has become a Boston ritual for me. Feeling great after the shower, I headed with my friend over to MJ’s for a beer. That’s when we realized something TERRIBLE had happened. My friend Carmela and I were desperate to find friends and family to make sure they were OK. I had told my brother, who also...

Lisa Roehm–Gensel – [Excerpt] “Those miserable Newton hills! Someone who qualified and trained hard for Boston shouldn’t be running such slow times…” (April 15, 2013)

Lisa Roehm–Gensel – [Excerpt] “Those miserable Newton hills! Someone who qualified and trained hard for Boston shouldn’t be running such slow times…” (April 15, 2013)

At the half way point, I was right on pace for my goal. But as the miles ticked by, they became more and more difficult. After Mile 16, everything fell apart. My legs would not move. I walked more often and getting down anywhere near a nine minute mile was impossible. Even the downhills were painfully slow. The only thing that made it half way bearable was the crowds. They were unbelievable. During those hills, I grabbed oranges from families on their lawns. It was getting warmer and some people were offering ice, which was a nice treat. These miles are where my body failed me and my mind did...

“Like no other marathon I’ve run. I understand why people who love it, love it.” – Greg Halen (April 15, 2013)

“Like no other marathon I’ve run. I understand why people who love it, love it.” – Greg Halen (April 15, 2013)

This race is going to be remembered for a long time, and for all the wrong reasons. I’ve gone back and forth in my head about whether or not to post this Race Report. Most of y’all know my background (or at least a lot of it). Over the years I’ve gotten pretty good at compartmentalizing things (a useful skill if you are called upon to be an interim aircraft accident investigation board member when there are civilian casualties–like a four year old boy who happens to have the same name as your four year old son). This ability is a blessing and a curse. And now, a VERY...

God took my two marathon verses, put them into one, and marked them with my Boston Marathon time! – DeDe Gibbs (April 18, 2011)

God took my two marathon verses, put them into one, and marked them with my Boston Marathon time! – DeDe Gibbs (April 18, 2011)

In September 2010, I ran the Fox Cities Marathon, placing 3rd Masters and 18th female. It was my third marathon, but the first I would run after having six children. I ran it in memory of my mother who had passed away a year before. My qualifying time was 3:33:23. My mother’s birthdate was 3-23-33! So ironic. I hoped to improve at Boston 2011 by ten minutes and get the numbers in the correct order! The following spring, at the age of 46, I did even better than that, finishing in 3:19. My 2011 Boston Placement Stats: Division: 36/1591 Top 2% Gender: 593/10073 Top 6% Overall: 4936/23879 Top...
